Tambrite Aqua+TM is a folding box board solution that brings additional sustainability credentials by minimizing the use of fossil-based materials and improving recyclability. Tambrite’s rich heritage of providing stiff, printable and runnable folding boxboard is now combined with an innovative dispersion barrier coating that replaces traditional fossil-based polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) layers. By replacing the traditional plastic layers with a dispersion barrier coating, Tambrite Aqua+TM helps to reduce the use of plastic that is increasingly subject to costs incurred by packagers, such as extended producer responsibility (EPR) fees. Tambrite Aqua+TM comes with the PAP21 logo that shows it is easily recyclable with normal paper and board waste streams.
More straightforward, efficient recycling
How does Tambrite Aqua+TM achieve this newfound circularity? To understand the major improvements achieved by this technology, we need to explore how the recycling process works. When using a traditional plastic layer or film, the layer or film needs to be separated from the box board, which is energy-intensive in its own right. The process also often wastes valuable pulp fibers that remain between film pieces and end up in the reject pile.
With Stora Enso’s Aqua+TM dispersion technology, the water-based solution integrates with the paperboard surface, safely creating the needed protection while facilitating easier recycling of the packaging. During the repulping process, the coating easily disintegrates, therefore preserving more fiber and maximizing the amount recovered.
